Metal Challenge #15: Still-useful bearings are scrapped
Much of the value in bearings exchanged during maintenance is often lost.
Pushing bearings to their limits
You know how it is: You do your scheduled maintenance and exchange all bearings that are due. Some are ready for the bin, but a lot of them just seem too good to throw away. So, what do you do with them? Throw them away anyway? Sell them for scrap value? Keep them as emergency spares?

SKF remanufacturing restores the bearings so they can be used instead of new bearings.
Restore their full useful life
There is a better alternative. By remanufacturing your old bearings, you can salvage their remaining value and get bearings with the same properties as new ones but at a lower cost. This way, you can reuse the same bearings multiple times, saving money, CO2, and sometimes lead time as well.
Secure emergency spares
But what if you just want to keep them as spares for emergencies? Then you can never be sure that they will perform according to specifications when you need them to. You can’t even be sure that they will run until the next scheduled maintenance stop.
However, if you remanufacture them first, you can have bearings with the same performance and warranties as new bearings without paying the same price.
Most bearing damages can be repaired
Remanufacturing is almost always a viable alternative. In damaged bearings, 98% of the damage is surface damage. Luckily, 90% of surface damage can be repaired by remanufacturing by SKF.
Not all remanufacturing is the same
Remanufacturing can mean different things to different service providers. Some only offer a lighter refurbishment but still call it remanufacturing. At SKF, we take great pride in our ability to thoroughly remanufacture your bearings. We have the knowledge, experience, and equipment to save even severely damaged bearings, which is how we maintain a high number of remanufacturable bearings.
